  15. 1.  What is Internet VoiceChat?
  16.  
  17.     Internet VoiceChat (IVC) is a program which allows live, two-way voice
  18.     communication between two users over the Internet.  Features such as
  19.     caller screening, an answering machine, and caller history are all
  20.     included in the software.  IVC uses simple, recognizable controls to
  21.     facilitate operation and is very easy to use.

  24. 2.  What do I need to use IVC?
  25.    
  26.     * Connectivity to a TCP/IP network such as the Internet
  27.     * WinSock 1.1 (Trumpet or vendor-specific)
  28.     * Windows 3.1 (tm)
  29.     * Any Windows-compatible sound card, with microphone
  30.     * 386 or better

  33. 3.  What is the sound quality like?  Is it really my voice?
  34.  
  35.     Much better than a telephone.  IVC transmits your own voice, not a
  36.     synthesized voice.  You will find IVC to be very clear and natural-
  37.     sounding.

  40. 4.  Can I use IVC with SL/IP or PPP?
  41.  
  42.     Yes!  Although version 1.0 had a bug which prevented this, version 1.1
  43.     is fully compatible with SL/IP and PPP connections.  Modem users will
  44.     notice a significant speed reduction as compared with Ethernet, but
  45.     future releases will contain compression technology which will reduce
  46.     delays.

  49. 5.  My SL/IP account gives me a new IP address each time I sign on.  Can I
  50.     still use IVC?
  51.  
  52.     Definitely.  Having users call you will be tricky, however, since your
  53.     calling address changes each time you connect.  One way to overcome this
  54.     is to agree to exchange conventional email messages containing your IP
  55.     addresses before connecting.  Clicking the About button will indicate
  56.     your calling address.

  59. 6.  Wait!  You said IVC works with Trumpet WinSock.  I have Trumpet, but
  60.     IVC is behaving strangely.

  62.     IVC needs Trumpet WinSock 2.0B or later to work properly.  If you don't
  63.     have version 2.0B, FTP to ftp.trumpet.com.au: pub/winsock/twsk20b.zip

  66. 7.  Can I call my own computer with IVC to test it out?

  68.     No.  You must call a different IP address.

  71. 8.  What kind of bandwidth does IVC use?

  73.     No more than an FTP session.

  76. 9.  So, the voice is not transmitted in real-time?
  77.  
  78.     Right.  IVC waits until a complete sentence (or sentences) is spoken
  79.     and then transmits the entire speech sample in one "burst."  This is
  80.     done because it is difficult to ensure consistent network throughput,
  81.     and also to keep IVC usable for SL/IP and PPP users.  In the future,
  82.     compression might make real-time transmission a reality for IVC.

  85. 10. Does IVC support conference calls?
  86.  
  87.     Currently IVC only supports point-to-point conversations.  Multiple-
  88.     party "conference calls" are planned for future versions.

  91. 11. I've heard about something called the MBone which is used for Internet
  92.     multimedia.  Do I need the MBone to use IVC?

  94.     Absolutely not!  As long as you have an IP address, you can use IVC.

  97. 12. Is there a list of users who use IVC?

  99.     It's in the works.  If you'd like to be included, send email to one of
  100.     the addresses at the beginning of this document, and you'll be included.  
  101.     The "Internet VoiceChat Phonebook" will be published in text format and
  102.     Windows Help format.

  105. 13. Is there anywhere on Internet Relay Chat (IRC) to find people who want
  106.     to VoiceChat?

  108.     Try sitting on channel #ivc.  This channel doesn't always exist but
  109.     you might find it sometimes.

  112. 14. Why is ____ dimmed?
  113.   
  114.     The Answering Machine option button is dimmed in the shareware version
  115.     because it is only active in the registered version of IVC.  Other
  116.     features such as the Fax button are dimmed because they are not yet
  117.     implemented.

  120. 15. Is there a Mac version?

  122.     Not presently, although I'd love to see this happen.  This is mostly
  123.     due to my own lack of Mac programming knowledge.  Any good Mac coders 
  124.     out there? :-)

  127. 16. Will IVC work with America OnLine/CompuServe/Delphi/Prodigy/etc?

  129.     No.  You need a direct connection to the Internet to use IVC.  Although
  130.     these online services provide gateways to the Internet, they don't
  131.     allow direct access.

  134. 17. We're not on the Internet, but our organization uses a TCP/IP network.
  135.     Will IVC work on our network?
  136.  
  137.     Yes.  IVC works on any TCP/IP network.  The Internet just happens to be
  138.     the largest one.

  141. 18. I use FTP Software's PC/TCP version 3.0, and I'm getting "Operation
  142.     would block" errors when I try to send voice data.  What can I do?
  143.    
  144.     There are two steps you need to take to get IVC to work right with
  145.     PC/TCP:
  146.  
  147.     a) You need to obtain a special kernel patch from FTP Software.  Send
  148.        email to support@ftp.com requesting the PC/TCP 3.0 kernel with "slow 
  149.        start" disabled.
  150.     b) Edit your PCTCP.INI file.  Find the [pctcp kernel] section and
  151.        set large-packets = 16   (or more)
  152.        (You must unload and restart the kernel for this to take effect.)
  153.        
  154.     These steps are well worth it, because IVC runs *extremely* fast with
  155.     the PC/TCP kernel.  If you can't wait, FTP to ftp.trumpet.com.au, and
  156.     get pub/winsock/twsk20b.zip (Trumpet WinSock 2.0B).

  159. 19. What future enhancements are planned for IVC?

  161.     * On-the-fly compression
  162.     * A fax metaphor allowing users to exchange graphics files
  163.     * A complete whiteboarding system
  164.     * Variable sampling rates
  165.     * Voice actuation (starts recording as soon as you start talking)
  166.     * PC speaker support (no sound card required!)
  167.     * IVCameo (exchanges still pictures of users upon connect)

  180.     Upgrades are sometimes free (e.g., version 1.0 to 1.1).  Upgrading from
  181.     1.1 to 2.0 will be only $5 for individual users.

  190. 24. I want to add sound effects to my answering machine message.  How can I
  191.     do this?

  193.     Easy.  IVC stores your outgoing announcement in a file called
  194.     MESSAGE.WAV, which is just a standard Windows .WAV file.  You can use
  195.     any sound editor (Sound Recorder, GoldWave, etc.) to splice together
  196.     your favorite sound effects with your own voice greeting.  As long as
  197.     the MESSAGE.WAV file resides in your IVC directory, it will be
  198.     transmitted when a user reaches your answering machine.

  201. 25. Can I leave IVC running in the background and have it pop up when I get
  202.     a call?
  203.  
  204.     Yes.  Just click the "minimize" button and proceed as normal.  When you
  205.     get a call, IVC will become active.

  208. 26. Why do you have two email addresses?  Which one should I use?
  209.  
  210.     My university's Internet provider does not allow commercial use, so the
  211.     AOL account was started for all purely commercial communication
  212.     regarding IVC.  Basically, if you want to send me a request to VoiceChat
  213.     or have a question of a non-commercial nature, email
  214.     ahrens26@wharton.upenn.edu (checked once a day during school months).
  215.     For questions of a commercial nature, email ivcsupp@aol.com (checked
  216.     once a week).

  219. 27. I get a message saying "Can't find VBRUN300.DLL".  What do I do?
  220.  
  221.     Some archives do not allow distributing this file with applications.
  222.     VBRUN300.DLL is available from many anonymous FTP sites.  Two of them
  223.     are:
  224.           winftp.cica.indiana.edu: pub/pc/win3/util/vbrun300.exe
  225.           freebsd.cdrom.com: /.8/cdrom/cdroms/windows/vbrun300.dll

  228. 28. I get an error message saying that "????????.vbx is out of date".  What
  229.     do I do?

  231.     You might have several versions of that file residing on your system.
  232.     Check for this and make sure you're using only the files that came with
  233.     the IVC archive.

  236. 29. Version 1.0 of IVC used to lock up my machine when there was an error.
  237.     Does this still happen?

  239.     No.  IVC 1.0 did not multitask cooperatively, but this has been changed
  240.     in version 1.1.  You can always click the Exit button to terminate IVC.

  243. 30. Sometimes the Error lamp lights up, but everything seems to be working
  244.     fine.  Should I worry about this?
  245.  
  246.     In most cases, no.  As long as everything works, there is no need to
  247.     worry about the Error indicator lighting up.  Not every WinSock error
  248.     is serious, and different implementations of WinSock generate error
  249.     messages for different reasons.  In other words, ignore the light unless
  250.     the program is not functioning.
